About the Substation
The 132/220 kV Substation Chinchwad is part of the Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) grid and operates at 220 kV as a key node in the state transmission network.
The substation includes outgoing feeders at 132/33 kV and houses high-capacity power transformers rated between 100–160 MVA with On Load Tap Changer (OLTC) mechanisms.
Technical Features Observed
- 220 kV Transmission System
- 100–160 MVA Power Transformers with OLTC
- SF₆ Circuit Breakers
- Double Bus Air Insulated Substation (AIS) Configuration
- Current Transformers (CTs) and Potential Transformers (PTs)
- Numerical Relays for Protection (Distance, Differential, Overcurrent, Earth Fault)
Learning Outcomes
The industrial visit provided students with practical exposure to high-voltage transmission systems, substation layout, and protection mechanisms used in real-world power networks.
Students gained understanding of:
- Grid operation and power transmission management
- Substation protection and safety practices
- Transformer operations and control mechanisms
- Industrial maintenance standards
